We were super honored when they asked us to create another print based off the first one we did. It’s a three color print and was a blast to work on, as usual.

One thing I am quickly learning about myself is how extremely impatient I am. There is a growing restlessness inside of me when I get focused on one or two things and no one else seems to be working with the same intensity as me.

As cliché as this may be, patience is a virtue. By definition, a virtue is “manly strength or courage to act.” When I read that earlier today I almost punched my monitor through my office wall. Am I a man? Am I courageous? I like to think so, but the part that bothered me the most is like lifting weights physically makes you stronger, patience is a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to grow and mature.

I hate that.

In the past, it was easy for me to say things like “I’m not a patient person” or to make excuses for my self-inflicted stress because it all comes back to who is in control. I want to be in control of when things happen, when people respond to e-mails, when we take on projects, and even things as simple as when I do or don’t clean my house.

I believe that Shed Labs has two of the most innovative and strategic thinkers with an unmatched ability to execute ideas. In my heart I believe that one day Shed Labs will be forced to expand beyond our newlywed family to search for more hard-headed and indignant sons-of-bitches that are looking for a way to push and stretch design further than we may want to go.

While it may be on the horizon, that day is not today.

So I will choose to keep my head down, work hard, focus on what my hands are doing, and unleash every effort to fight to produce the greatest work for the projects I have been given today. The rest, as they say, will take care of itself.

-Beau

SOPA & PIPA

I’m not usually the guy who tells another guy what he should believe, but to me the Protect IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act are shear lunacy. It might be different if it would work, but it wouldn’t. Illegal sites would simply move home base overseas while legit companies on American soil could lose profits and/or get shut down completely.

Take it for what it is, but get informed. If you value the freedom the internet gives our great nation, then go sign the petition to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Tonight we worked on some wood signage for our friend, Tyler. I never knew when I started screen printing that I was going to need an advance degree in mathmatics. However, me and Wellington had a blast looking at each other with blank stares, shrugging our shoulders, and scratching our heads.

So here’s a few process shots to satisfy your Shed cravings.

The boards were too big to fit our jig, so we had to use clamps to hold the screens in place.

I like to call this one “Daddy’s Little Helper.”

I really love these shots below from their recent trip to Hueco, Texas. If there’s another thing we suck at it’s delivering news. If you’re going to be in Greenville tomorrow night be sure to swing by Fish Eye Studios and pick up some sweet art and other usable goodies.

For those who have been asking, we will be selling our very last print of the MeWithoutYou poster framed and numbered. It will only be available at the show, so come out and take it home. Free drinks and fingerlings will be on hand for the folks who vote party over art.

For those not in the know, Indie Craft Parade is a juried art market that happens once in year in the bustling metropolis of Greenville, South Carolina. It was pretty inspiring to see so many young talented artists, craftsmen and illustrators all gathered in one spot.

We got to hang out with some dudes we don’t normally get to spend time with and even a few dudes we’d met via Twitter. We got to spend some time and trade some paper goods with our good pals over at The Half and Half. The Shed crew and their brides also had the pleasure of hanging out with Mr. and Mrs. Ramos, who shared some wisdom-y nuggets with us over some cold beverages and pizza. Speaking of Andrew Ramos, if you’re not familiar with his side hustle, Parachute Trusty Fabrics, get with it. I’m pretty sure these tees are now the official torso coverings of Shed Labs. Our boys at Billiam Jeans were rocking a corner booth and spreading the word about the filth that is human trafficking. So many good good folks, it’s hard to cram ‘em all in.

Thanks, to everybody who came out and paid their hard-earned bills for some cool swag. We appreciate it. Next year. Come. Do it.

As always, anything you see should be up in the shop in the next few days, with the exception of the little blue gloom prints. Fresh out of those little guys.

It will land in the shop on Saturday after the show. For anybody making room on their wall, this guy is 3 colors at 24” x 18”. Get em while their hot because this was a limited run of 50.

They are designers and artists. The attention to detail in their illos and gritty style sets the bar high for all of us. Always experimenting with texture, ink, paint, etc. is good. We had a blast picking through it, pausing, sketching, pausing, sketching, pausing, talking, pausing and wondering. When the film was concluded, like most folks, we were confused. After a bit of research and digging we realized what baby eternity was trying to say.

We interpreted the monolith as a learning tool given to us by somebody else out there in the great black wonder. This tool, however, was misused by the folks it was given to. The monkey folk used it for hunting, then their jealousy turned it to a weapon. The intellectuals were given the knowledge to discover new places, but used it for financial gain and one-up-man-ship. And alas, our faithful cosmonauts were given Hal9000 and used it as a tool of speculation and fear. When Dave passes through the monolith he accepts his rebirth and comes to terms with his surroundings and his purpose.

Our execution is a vague reference to all the shiny objects we’ve used and built to get ahead in life but caused us to miss our divine purpose of understanding our world and gaining self-actualization. In short, all the stuff societies had built or discovered in the film was essentially lost in space.

If Kubrick and the author of the book couldn’t agree on what the movie meant, then maybe we didn’t get it either. Hope you guys dig it and hit us up on twitter to tell us what you think.

I can hear the collective cheers amassing across the nation and appreciate your standing ovation, but please, take your seats.

It is extremely easy to say “I’d like to do this” or “It would be smart for us to do this,” but having a dream does not equal setting a goal. Last week, I made it my goal to drink one gallon of water in a day. I recognized the physical benefits of drinking water, but I knew I would never achieve my goal unless I made a plan.

Step 1- Get a gallon of water.

Step 2- Drink said gallon of water.

Step 3- Slam empty container on the ground in celebration.

The first step is always the hardest. I spent so much time looking at half empty jugs of milk and juice in my refrigerator and justified putting off Tim’s challenge because I didn’t have the tools I thought I needed. Finally, I bit the bullet, went to the gas station and bought a gallon of water.

Once I had my gallon of water, it went with me everywhere I went. While I was working, it rode shotgun in my truck. Every time I got in or out of my truck I would have to look at that damn jug and it’s condescension. Everyday that I didn’t reach Step 3, the jug was defeating me.

For every goal achieved, there are sacrifices made. For me, every sip of water I took represented a minute I would have to spend in the bathroom. The question soon shifted from “can I drink this entire gallon” to “is it worth my time to drink this much water if I’m going to have to spend so much time in the bathroom.” Once I was able to weigh the sacrifice against the pending goal, it further cemented my persistence.

Once a goal is achieved, it must be celebrated. After a week of ending my day with a half empty bottle, it was such a pleasure to slam that empty jug on the ground today as hard as I could because I knew I had done something I couldn’t do as of yesterday. Of course, after I backed over it with my truck I had to run inside to piss.

In life and business, attaining a goal comes down to four things: a clear and verbalized goal, small and attainable steps, weighing sacrifice against end gain, and celebrating a job well-done.

What are you striving for right now? Let us know when you succeed so we can celebrate and help you crush that jug.
